Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a percentage of a number?
Multiply the number by the percentage, then divide by 100. 20% of 150 is (20 × 150) ÷ 100 = 30.
How do I calculate percentage increase or decrease?
Subtract the old value from the new one, divide by the old value, then multiply by 100. Going from 50 to 65 is ((65 − 50) ÷ 50) × 100 = 30% increase. A negative result means a decrease.
What’s the difference between markup and margin?
Markup is profit as a percentage of cost; margin is profit as a percentage of selling price. A $50 item sold for $75 has a 50% markup (25 ÷ 50) but only a 33.3% margin (25 ÷ 75) — same numbers, different base, very different-looking percentages.
Percentage points vs percent — what’s the difference?
If a rate moves from 20% to 25%, that’s a 5 percentage-point increase, but a 25% relative increase (5 ÷ 20 × 100). Mixing the two up is one of the most common percentage mistakes in the news.
How do I calculate a tip or discount?
A tip is "X% of the bill": 18% of $60 is $10.80. A discount subtracts that amount: a 20%-off $80 item costs $80 − (20% of $80) = $64. The calculator above handles both — use "X% of Y" for the amount, then subtract or add it yourself.
